How do I find where a water leak is actually coming from?
The short answer: start with the water meter test — turn off every faucet and water-using appliance, then watch the meter. If it moves, the leak is on a pressurized supply line on your side. Then trace visually, remembering that water runs downhill: stains and damp spots lead back uphill to the source. Check supply lines and appliance connections first, drains second, roof and windows third. If you still can't find it, leak-detection specialists can locate hidden leaks with thermal imaging and acoustic listening equipment — usually without tearing your walls open.
Step 1: The meter test (five minutes, free)
This is the single most useful thing you can do yourself. Turn off all water in the house — faucets, ice maker, washing machine, irrigation — then go look at your water meter. Note the reading (or the leak indicator dial, if it has one), wait 15–30 minutes without using any water, and check again. If the meter moved, water is leaving your system somewhere: you've got an active supply-line leak. If it didn't move, the problem is more likely a drain, a roof issue, or exterior water finding its way in.
Step 2: Trace it visually — follow it uphill
Water obeys gravity, so where you see it is rarely where it starts. Look above and behind the visible damage:
- Stains on ceilings: the leak is above — check the room upstairs, the supply lines to the bathroom, or the roof.
- Damp baseboards or floor edges: could be a supply line inside the wall, a failed appliance seal, or water migrating under flooring from another room.
- Appliance connections first: water heaters, washing machines, dishwashers, refrigerator ice-maker lines, and toilet supply lines are the usual suspects. Look for corrosion, wet spots, and hissing.
- Drains second: a drain leak often shows up only while water is running — run each fixture and watch.
- Roof and windows third: if the damage appears during or after rain, have someone watch the suspect area from inside while another person runs a hose over sections of roof or window trim from outside, one section at a time.
Step 3: When you can't find it, call a specialist — not a saw
Hidden leaks inside walls and under slabs are exactly what leak-detection specialists exist for. They use thermal imaging cameras (wet areas hold temperature differently), acoustic listening devices (pressurized leaks make noise you can hear with the right equipment), and sometimes moisture meters to map the wet area. A good specialist pinpoints the leak so the repair opening is small instead of exploratory demolition. This is one of the best uses of a specialist in the whole water-damage world.
